I began my involvement with Coffee Party USA in February 2010, when my wife showed me "The Snowy Video," which showed Coffee Party co-founder Annabel Park explaining why and how she started the Coffee Party on Facebook the previous month, along her vision for it as she stood holding a covered coffee cup as snow fell around her. I was hooked. Within the month, my wife and I followed the Coffee Party USA Facebook page, then called Join the Coffee Party Movement, participated in organizing calls, and organized and co-led the inaugural meeting of the Ann Arbor Coffee Party as part of the Coffee Party Kick-off on March 13, 2010, one of hundreds of meetings with thousands of participants that day. That day, I created the Ann Arbor Coffee Party Facebook page (now Coffee Party USA-Pennsylvania; I created the Ann Arbor Coffee Party Facebook group to replace it) to communicate with members of the local chapter. I then created the Coffee Party USA community on LiveJournal on March 20, 2010. My wife and I returned two weeks later for the second in-person meeting of the Ann Arbor Coffee Party on March 27, 2010 as part of the National Coffee Party Summit, which featured nearly 500 meetings nationwide. At that meeting, we handed over leadership of the Ann Arbor Coffee Party meetings to another member, as we were moving out of the area. However, I am still the administrator of the Coffee Party USA-Pennsylvania page and the Ann Arbor Coffee Party Facebook group, so my involvement continues.

I wasn't the only person hooked, as "The Snowy Video" helped draw national attention to the Coffee Party. 90,000 people followed the Coffee Party Facebook page by the first week of March and the Washington Post, New York Times, MSNBC, CNN, and C-SPAN all covered the Coffee Party during February and March 2010, including CNN reports on the meetings of the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., chapters and C-SPAN coverage of the National Coffee Party Summit.

Hey, all of you binge-watching your guilty pleasure shows while staying safe at home, relaxing after working from home, returning for work after wearing a mask all day, or just stressed out from the real world! I have another suggestion to make your time in front of the big-screen TV in the living room, the slightly smaller screen in the bedroom, or even holding your tablet or smartphone work to help your appreciation of politics and government on television and then apply your understanding to help Coffee Party USA in one of our projects.

With the 2018-2019 television season out of the way, the members and volunteers of Coffee Party USA will move on to the 2019-2020 television season. Watch for the posting of the shortlists for the show categories along with an invitation to stream them while staying safe at home. If you want to become one of the voters for this or future Golden Coffee Cups, such as for the best political movies of 2020, become a member. Voting will happen on a members-only Facebook group.

Before I present the shortlists, I’m sharing a two-part activity Coffee Party USA and I are proposing our readers and supporters do.

The first part of the activity is to stream as many of the shows on the shortlists between now and March 13, 2021 to see which have the best portrayals of politics and government on television. The second is to become a member of Coffee Party USA by March 13, 2021, which you can do for as little as $30.00 per year. That’s because the members will also vote on the nominees and winners this year. That means you!

That’s your two-part activity. Now, have fun watching television while supporting the work of Coffee Party USA, whose core values include continuous learning on behalf of an informed citizenry, joining Coffee Party USA, and voting on the nominees!

Without any further ado, I present the shortlists for the Golden Coffee Cups for Television, beginning with the shortlist for Best Drama Series about Politics and Government.*

Donate to Coffee Party USA on Giving Tuesday

Happy Giving Tuesday!

National Day of Giving encourages giving back. It takes place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

Quite simply, take advantage of all the holiday deals to add to your charitable giving. Combined with your family, friends, local and national organizations and through the power of social media, Day of Giving can become a tradition worth passing on.

My tradition for the day, which I began On Giving Tuesday 2017, then continued in 2018 and last year, is to <donate to my favorite non-profit, Coffee Party USA.  I am a director and officer of the organization and I just donated $10.00 to it for Giving Tuesday. In addition, I’m asking my readers to match my donation.  Click on the red “Please donate” button on the lower left corner of your screen and follow the instructions, including entering $10.00 in the “Other” box. However, if you want to donate more, be our guest!

As for what my donation and yours will do for Coffee Party USA, our supporters, and our country, I’m going to be a good environmentalist and recycle what I wrote originally in Happy National Coffee Ice Cream Day from Coffee Party USA! and reused in Celebrate National Coffee Day 2019 by donating to Coffee Party USA.

Coffee Party USA ia a 501c(4) nonprofit social welfare organization dedicated to empowering and connecting communities to reclaim our government for the people. To support its efforts, which include educating the public on our website and on our Facebook page, registering people to vote with our partners TurboVote and National Voter Registration Day, and reminding them to vote through our Voter Buddy program, please consider donating. A donation of $10.00 for ten years of Coffee Party USA is recommended. For those who wish to give at a higher level of support and be more involved in the organization, please consider becoming a member [by clicking on the blue button that says “Become a member” in the lower right corner of your screen]. To do the valuable work of the Coffee Party…volunteer [by clicking on “Volunteer” in the navigation bar at the top of the page]. Not only will Coffee Party USA thank you for it, so will the country!

Thanks for donating! Now treat yourself. Since today is National Pie Day, eat a slice of pie. If you want something healthier, today is also National Red Apple Day, so you can eat that instead.

At the end of May, Coffee Party USA invited its supporters to stream the political TV series on the Golden Coffee Cups shortlist while staying safe at home and asked them to become members so they could vote on the shortlist to determine the nominees. For the past three weeks, the members and volunteers of Coffee Party USA did that just as they did earlier this year for the Golden Coffee Cup movie nominees.

After the preliminary round of voting, Veep leads nominees with three nominations, followed by House of Cards, Madame Secretary, and The Handmaid’s Tale with two each. All of the other 32 nominees have one nomination each.

Here are the nominees in six categories showcasing the best in politics and government on the small screen during the 2018-2019 television season.

Hey, all of you binge-watching your guilty pleasure shows while staying safe at home! That includes all of you watching "Tiger King" — you know who you are! On behalf of Coffee Party USA, I have a suggestion to make your time in front of the big-screen TV in the living room, the slightly smaller screen in the bedroom, or even holding your tablet or smartphone work to help your appreciation of politics and government in film and then apply your understanding to help Coffee Party USA in one of our projects. Yes, it's time for this year's edition of the Golden Coffee Cups for movies.

A year ago today, I wished my readers Happy Irish Coffee Day and Happy Birthday to Coffee Party USA! Today, I am reversing the order and wishing Coffee Party USA an early happy 9th birthday. I begin the celebration of the anniversary of the founding of the nonprofit for which I'm a director with Birthday by The Beatles.

If it's a birthday, then there must be presents! I am asking my readers give a gift to Coffee Party USA by making a donation of $9.00 (or more) to match the $9.00 donation I made yesterday. Your donation will allow "you to be a part of the important work of Coffee Party USA as we empower and connect communities to reclaim our government for the people." It will go to improving our website, the new version of which Coffee Party USA debuted in October and registering people to vote with our partners TurboVote and National Voter Registration Day. There are municipal and some state elections coming up this year and people need to be registered and reminded to vote in them.

If donating is not enough, my readers can become a member or volunteer. Coffee Party USA needs people to help with all the projects listed above and then some, as we plan on doing even more to empower and connect communities to reclaim our government for the people in the future.

Once again, I am asking my readers to match my donation of $9.00. The other directors and I will thank you now and American democracy will thank you later!

Yesterday, I donated $5.00 to Coffee Party USA. I ask all my readers to match me by making a donation of $5.00 or more. It will go to improving our website, which we are in the middle of doing, finding Voter Buddies to help people register and get to the polls, registering to vote with our partners TurboVote and National Voter Registration Day, and organize local community groups. It's an election year, and Coffee Party USA is doing our part to get people involved and ready to vote this November. Donate and you can help in that effort. If that's not enough, become a member or volunteer.

From the Coffee Party Blog: Taxpayers Take Action — April 10 thru 18

Please join the Facebook group Taxpayers Take Action 2011 to participate in planning and strategy for April 10-18 events.

Wow. So, we're still kind of stunned by the flood of donations this week. Despite the website crashes we suffered, we ended up topping $128,000 in our month-long membership drive, with an incredible $75,000 raised since Monday afternoon. Apart from "wow," the primary words on our minds are "thank you." We don't know what else to say.

Coffee Party membership card

Today is the last day to join and receive a Founding Member card with a unique membership number and an Official Coffee Party USA bumper sticker with the motto "Incite Civility & Reason." Deadline is 11:59:59 P.M., Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time. That's just one second before 5 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, 4 A.M. Central Standard Time, 3 A.M. Mountain Standard Time, 2 A.M. Pacific Standard Time, and 1 A.M. Alaska Standard Time.

To sign up for a 1-year Founding Membership, click here and to sign up for a Sustaining Membership with automatic renewal, click here. Minimum donation is $10, which is for unemployed and students. The standard recommended donation is $50.

The membership drive was originally scheduled to last only until the end of February, but overwhelming last-minute demand resulted in the extension until just before Midnight March 3 in the farthest west inhabited U.S. states.

As of yesterday evening, more than 3000 people had contributed more than $115,000 since the membership drive began. More than $70,000 of that was donated between Monday afternnon and Tuesday night. This last amount is as much money as was donated during all of 2010!

On Feb. 28 we got a lot of donations all at once, which crashed our on-line donations tool several times. To avoid the overload, we've extended the Founding Members drive until midnight Hawaiian time March 3, 2011, which is 5 AM eastern time March 4, 2011. Despite the interruptions, we blew past our goal of $50,000 and are now over $115,000 with $70,000 raised since Monday afternoon.

Mod note: Coffee Party USA raised more money in the last two days than we did all of last year.

The Truth Is

Dear Friends,

Thank you for persevering despite our donations site overloading several times last night. It takes more than that to deter a Coffee Party Founding Member! This membership drive has surpassed all our goals, and, surpassed our imagination.

Due to Hundreds Joining at Once, Our Donation Site Has Been Crashing!
Dear Coffee Partier,
An extraordinary thing happened today.
We sent out an email at 4pm ET reminding people who have not already joined that today was the last day to become a Founding Member of the Coffee Party.
Hundreds of people started joining at once and our payment site has been crashing!

We apologize for the inconvenience if you've had difficulties or have been unable to contribute. The problem seems to come and go depending on how much traffic we get on the page. To avoid the overload, we are extending the Founding Members drive until midnight Hawaiian time March 3, 2011, which is 5 AM eastern time March 4, 2011.

We are currently working with our service provider to fix the problem so that you don't continue to have this problem.
The great news is that despite the service interruptions, we blew past our goal of reaching $50,000 and we are now nearing $70,000.
Starting tomorrow, please click here and make a contribution of $10 or more to receive a personalized Founding Member card and a Coffee Party bumper sticker.
Thank you all for being part of this movement! We are truly excited about 2011.
-Annabel, Eric, Sabina, David and the Coffee Party National Team
